Diljit Dosanjh plays the role of the slain folk singer Amar Singh Chamkila in director Imtiaz Ali’s upcoming film of the same name. Chamkila was assassinated in Punjab at the age of 27. In a recent interview, Diljit revealed that they filmed a scene at the same spot where Amar Singh Chamkila was killed in real life. During the interaction, Diljit also shared an anecdote, revealing how he felt Chamkila’s energy on the set.

Speaking to Ranveer Allahbadia, Diljit said, “I could feel Chamkila’s energy 100 percent on the set. We shot at the same place where Chamkila was killed. In the same place, Imtiaz sir shot that scene. Exactly at that point where he fell down after he was shot. I was holding tumbi in my hand during the scene, and when I fell, the tumbi’s wire pricked my hand. And when I was falling, I could see my hand and drops of blood falling on the ground. I suddenly realised that this is the same spot where Chamkila’s blood must have also fallen.”

During the trailer launch event of the film, Imtiaz praised Diljit for his performance, which left the actor in tears. Imtiaz had said, “In a small town of Punjab, when he was playing Chamkila, he himself didn’t know who he was. He thought he was Chamkila and because of that, even I didn’t realise that he is Diljit Dosanjh. He was just Chamkila. Everyone on set felt the same, that this is unfolding in real time. Diljit wasn’t there. When someone does something like this, it becomes memorable.”

Amar Singh Chamkila narrates the untold tale of Punjab’s original pop star, Amar Singh Chamkila, who transcended poverty to become a beloved icon through his music in the 1980s. His life was cut short and he was assassinated at the age of 27. The film will premiere on April 12 on Netflix.
