Amid the ongoing campaigning for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the opposition seems to have got a readymade public issue to take on the ruling parties — an approximate 15 per cent hike of the power tariff in Maharashtra. To corner the government on the issue, INDIA alliance candidates of both the Baramati and Pune Lok Sabha seats hit the streets on Thursday.

The Opposition parties gathered outside the regional office of the power utility in Pune on Thursday. The protest was joined by NCP(SP) candidate from the Baramati Lok Sabha seat Supriya Sule and Congress candidate from the Pune seat Ravindra Dhangekar. The NCP(SP) and the Congress are a part of the INDIA alliance.

The leaders said the entire country is suffering due to inflation and added that it is the responsibility of the government to ease out the situation.

In a press statement, the INDIA bloc said, “The State government led by Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, Ajit Pawar-led NCP and BJP has given a shock to the citizens by increasing power tariff when the inflation is highest ever. The hike of 15 percent is a burden on the citizens who are already suffering due to high inflation.”

Speaking to the media, Sule said, “It is not just the power tariff, even prices of medicines have also increased. This has made life difficult for the citizens. We demand a rollback on the hike of power tariff and prices of medicines. If our demands are not met, we will intensify the protest.”

“The country is witnessing inflation. It is difficult for the poor and middle class people in the country to survive due to the inflation. The ruling parties in the state government, instead of giving relief to the citizens, are busy in increasing the income of private companies. The voters should teach them a lesson in the election,” said Dhangekar.

Festive offer

As a part of the five-phase polling in Maharashtra, Baramati will vote in the Phase 3 of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections on May 7 while Pune will vote in the Phase 4 on May 13.
