9.5L seats available in Maharashtra schools under revised RTE this year

With RTE admissions diverted to the government-run and aided schools, there is a huge increase in the number of schools participating in RTE admissions this year. There are over 75,000 schools registered for RTE admissions, as opposed to around 8,800 schools last year, when RTE admissions were intended to admit children from economically weaker sections to self-financed schools alone.

Self–financed schools are not obligated to admit students under RTE, because as per the new amendment they are all registered in the system this year too.

Director of Primary Education Sharad Gosavi explained, “There is no clarity yet on which private schools will not have to admit children under RTE, as the allotment will be as per the candidates’ residential address. We have included all schools in the system, but in the process of allotment, it is government or aided-schools that will be given preference. But self-financed schools will also be considered if there is no government school in the locality.”
