Apple cider vinegar (ACV), which has become popular of late as a natural remedy for various health concerns, has been found to be effective in many studies in managing chronic diseases but not weight loss as such. A recent study has now found a more definitive link with weight loss. It shows that ACV taken daily, between four and 12 weeks, significantly reduced body mass index, weight, body fat ratio (BFR), waist and hip circumferences, fasting blood glucose, cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
Published in the BMJ Nutrition, Prevention and Health, the study found that consuming 15 ml of ACV for at least eight weeks can reduce fasting blood sugar, triglyceride and total cholesterol levels in overweight or obese individuals.
The primary active compound in ACV, which is believed to contribute to its potential weight loss benefits, is acetic acid. This has been shown to increase the production of certain hormones that promote feelings of fullness, such as leptin and adiponectin. Additionally, acetic acid may enhance the body’s ability to burn fat by increasing the activity of certain enzymes involved in fat metabolism.
One of the proposed mechanisms by which ACV helps in weight loss is through its ability to promote satiety. An earlier study in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association had found that participants who consumed a drink containing ACV before a meal reported feeling more satiated and consumed fewer calories during the meal compared to those who did not have the ACV drink.
ACV can regulate blood sugar levels. Unstable blood sugar levels can contribute to increased hunger and cravings, which can lead to overeating and weight gain. The acetic acid in ACV slows down the digestion of carbohydrates, thereby reducing the rate at which sugars enter the bloodstream and stabilizing blood sugar levels. It may also improve insulin sensitivity, which plays a key role in the body’s ability to effectively use glucose for energy and promote better metabolic health.
A common way to consume ACV is by diluting it with water or adding it to beverages like teas or smoothies. You could sprinkle it on salads too. A typical recommended dosage is one to two tablespoons of ACV mixed with eight ounces of water or another liquid.
It’s essential to note that consuming undiluted ACV can be harmful to your teeth and esophagus due to its high acidity. Consider using a straw to minimize contact with your teeth.
While ACV may be a useful addition to your weight management plan, it’s important to remember that it should be considered a complementary approach rather than a miracle solution. Sustainable weight loss and overall health require a comprehensive approach that includes a balanced diet, regular physical activity and a healthy lifestyle. Besides, it cannot be used by those who have low potassium levels and are on medication that reacts to acetic acid. So do consult your nutritionist.
