Jagjit Singh is best known for reviving the ghazal as a modern genre. An admirer of Ghalib, he used the bol-pradhan (spoken emphasis) style to sing of love, loss and melancholia. In a career spanning forty years, Singh sang in Punjabi, Urdu, Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati and Nepali, often flirting with new-age ideas — in 1987, he released ‘Beyond Time’, India’s first digitally recorded album. For his pioneering legacy, Singh was honoured with the Padma Bhushan in 2003.
