The 2024 Indian Premier League is the 17th edition of the two-month-long cricketing extravaganza. Five-time champions Chennai Super Kings will be hoping to retain the trophy and thereby become the first team in history to win the title for a record 6th time. Mumbai Indians too are five-time victors. This year, the IPL starts from March 22 with a blockbuster clash between CSK and RCB in Chennai.

Ahead of the 2024 edition, retired West Indies batter Chris Gayle tops the chart for the most number of sixes in the league’s history with 357. He is followed by Mumbai Indians’ Rohit Sharma who has 257 maximums while former Royal Challengers Bangalore player AB de Villiers comes third with 251 hits over the boundary ropes. The legendary Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the Chennai Super Kings skipper, comes next with 239 sixes and RCB’s Virat Kohli rounds out the top 5 with 234 sixes of his own.

In the 2023 season, RCB captain Faf du Plessis topped the charts with 36 sixes in 14 matches. He was followed by CSK’s Shivam Dube who hit 35 sixes in 16 and Gujarat Titans’ Shubman Gill who blasted 33 maximums in 17 innings. RCB’s Glenn Maxwell with 31 sixes from 14 matches and CSK’s Ruturaj Gaikwad with 30 sixes in 16 matches closed out the top 5
