Right from the very first match in its short history, when Kolkata Knight Riders’ Brendon McCullum bludgeoned 158* off 73 deliveries, the Indian Premier League was destined to be a safe haven for run scorers. Over the years that have followed, it has seen quite a few, who have held the mantle. At the end of each season, the orange cap is awarded to the player with most runs.
Currently at the top of its all time tally sits Royal Challengers Bangalore’s Virat Kohli. The longtime RCB captain with an astounding 7263 runs from 237 games. Kohli, who was among the first signings for the RCB back in 2008, has leveled seven hundreds - more than anyone else - and 50 half-centuries during the same time. In the 2016 season, Kohli led RCB to the final and scored the heap of the runs for the franchise - 923 - a record for a single season.
Below him sits Shikhar Dhawan, who has played for Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad and Punjab, and amassed 6617 runs during his IPL career. Not that far away from Dhawan is his former opening partner at Sunrisers Hyderabad. David Warner with 6397 runs, is the only overseas batter in the top five run scorers list. Rohit Sharma, who has led Mumbai Indians to five IPL titles sits at fourth with 6211 runs. Rohit also has played more games than any of the batters in the top five 243. Suresh Raina, former Chennai Super Kings batter who also earned the moniker of Mr. IPL for his consistency with the bat, is at fifth with 5528 runs.
