The change in season puts many of us at risk of catching a cold. As such, it becomes even more important to take care of our health and in case the need arises, make use of natural remedies that have been passed down from generations and are proven to provide relief instead of popping over-the-counter medicines.
One such remedy is a kadha, an ancient drink that has been consumed in India since time immemorial. In a reel that has gone viral on social media, actor Raveena Tandon talks about her unique kadha recipe that is made using carom seeds, cloves, black pepper, whole turmeric, ginger, ghee, honey, and water. She mentions that she makes this drink for her children when they are unwell because it provides several benefits and helps provide relief against symptoms of cold.

But, how effective is this recipe in helping relieve symptoms of cold and flu? Ipsita Chakraborty, senior nutritionist at Hungry Koala Bangalore, says that warm liquids like kadha can increase blood circulation and induce sweating, which may help the body fight off infections. Additionally, the steam can help clear congestion.
While strong scientific evidence for each ingredient’s individual impact on immunity is evolving, Chakraborty says their combined properties offer potential benefits:
Considering the presence of ingredients like ghee and honey, Chakraborty stresses that individuals with specific dietary restrictions or health conditions must keep the following in mind:
Ghee is high in saturated fat, which can raise LDL cholesterol (often called bad cholesterol). People managing cholesterol should limit consumption or opt for a small amount of clarified butter from sources high in monounsaturated fats like avocado oil.
Honey contains sugar, which can affect blood sugar levels. Diabetics can use a small amount of honey or consider alternatives like stevia for a touch of sweetness.
