Gill’s many hills to climb: By 24-Test mark, Tendulkar had 5 tons, Kohli 6, Dravid 2 and Gavaskar 8; how do Gill’s early career figures stack up?

IND vs ENG: Though Shubman Gill has made 342 runs at an average of 48.86 runs in the onging India vs England series his overall career stats have looked ordinary so far for the potential he has promised.

Shubman Gill’s second innings half-century in the fourth Test at Ranchi in a tricky run chase showed his maturity as a batter and calm head on his shoulders. However, despite having a decent series against England so far Gill’s overall Test record after 24 Tests has been mediocre.

Gill in his short career made 1382 runs at an average of 33.71 with three centuries to his name. The 24-year-old made his debut at MCG and started with a 45 and 35*.

Let us have a look at how the other Indian legends have fared after 24 Tests in their careers

Virat KohliOverall career: 113* matches, 8848 runs @ 49.61 average and 29 centuries

The Indian talisman made his debut against West Indies in Sabina Park and started with a horrid start to his red-ball career with a couple of low scores of 4 and 15. However, after 24 Tests he made 1721 runs at an average of 46.51. At this point in his career, Kohli would make six centuries.

Rahul DravidOverall career: 164 matches, 13288 runs @ 52.31 average and 36 centuries

Festive offer

The current Indian coach was one of the finest and most respected batters of his generation. He started with a bang in Test match cricket with a 95. Sunil GavaskarOverall career: 125 matches, 10122 runs @ 52.31 average and 34 centuries

Unlike Kohli, Dravid and Tendulkar the little master got off to a good start in his Test career against the mighty West Indies back in the day which had one of the terrifying pace attacks. He started with a 65 and 67* on his debut. By his 24 Test match, his average would already be 51.78 with 2123 runs to his name and scored most whooping eight tons at a very young age.
