Are chemicals leaching out of your hair straightening products seeping through skin pores, entering the body and damaging organs? A case study of a woman in The New Journal England Of Medicine has raised an alarm as it found how glyoxylic acid in hair-straightening creams breaks down to oxalic acid in the human body, binds to calcium and forms crystals that damage the kidney and raise creatinine levels.

Should we then junk hair straightening treatments altogether and look at alternatives? Dr DM Mahajan, Senior Consultant, Dermatology, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, says for healthy people, occasional and guided use of hair-straightening products may not pose a significant risk. “However, those with kidney problems, such as chronic kidney disease, should exercise extreme caution or seek alternative hair treatments. Even normal people should follow protocol on the quantity used and duration of treatments,” he says.

Can hair-straightening products cause kidney damage?

The risk arises from the potential of these substances to be absorbed through the skin or inhaled during the application process. So it must be done at certified centres with controlled exposure and norms. Also, in the case mentioned in the study, this happened after three visits by the woman in three years and each time she experienced vomitting, diarrhoea, burning sensation, fever and back pain. Back out if you know you are reactive and allergic. Also, the body might develop conditions in intervening years and one should assess one’s basic kidney parameters before going in for chemical-heavy treatments.

Glyoxylic acid can release formaldehyde with high heat, which has already been proven to be associated with an increased risk of acute kidney failure. And hot iron treatments during straightening procedures can trigger release of formaldehyde.

Does this mean that people who have kidney issues should not use these hair products at all?

Festive offer

Yes. Since their kidneys are already compromised, additional exposure to these harmful substances could exacerbate their condition and potentially lead to acute kidney failure. Even when products claim to be formaldehyde-free, some of them may still contain trace amounts or similar harmful compounds. Besides, hair relaxers often contain sodium hydroxide or other strong alkaline agents that can cause severe chemical burns and irritation if not used properly.

How can one use hair straightening products safely?

There should be a gap of at least four to six months between treatments. The right quantity is important. Follow the instructions carefully and use the minimum amount necessary to achieve the desired results. Additionally, it’s advisable to use these products in well-ventilated areas to minimize exposure to fumes or vapours. I would say, let’s look for alternatives or just manage the hair we are born with without harming ourselves.
