Shaan was poised to lend his voice to Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan in his latest film, Dunki. However, the song met an unfortunate fate and was cut out by the film’s director, Rajkummar Hirani, at the editing table. In a recent interview, the playback singer opened up about missing out on the opportunity to sing for Shah Rukh and expressed how significant it would have been for him if the song hadn’t been axed.

Speaking to Galatta India, Shaan expressed, “At this point in my career that song would have meant the sun and the moon for me. To get to sing again for Shah Rukh Khan after Om Shanti Om, it would have been brilliant. The song was a beautiful duet with Shreya Ghoshal, it had great potential, it worked not just as a film song but had that ‘Hawayein Hawayein’ vala feeling. I was really counting on that but that’s life, it is okay.”

Earlier, Shaan had taken to X to explain the reason behind the song not making it to the final cut of Dunki. He wrote, “I just want to clear the air about why my song was not part of the film .. the song, a beautiful breezy duet (with @shreyaghoshal) “Durr kahi Durr” was recorded and also picturised in Kashmir .. but on the edit table .. it was RajuHirani’s call to drop the song .. (after a lot of contemplation.. ) He was very transparent about it with me.. and I really appreciate that.. and I fully understand that the film is top priority. Hopefully, You will get to hear the song in his future project .. but not in Dunki…”

Although Shaan’s song didn’t find its place in Dunki, the singer was presented with another opportunity, this time by none other than AR Rahman. Recounting the experience, Shaan reminisced about lending his voice to a segment of Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan: II, which proved to be his most challenging task.

Speaking about the same, he shared, “Recently I got an offer from AR Rahman sahab to sing for him in the film Ponniyin Selvan: II. It was a song that portrayed the fight between Ratchasa Maamaney and Balamuralikrishna. It’s was like a play, like a shouty rap song and I was thinking, ‘Why has he called me? I have a soft voice.’ Then I messaged him and said, ‘Sir, I can’t do more than this.’ He casually said, ‘Do it, it is possible.’ That was a challenge.”
