India Thursday expressed concern over the attack on the Iranian embassy in Syria — which is suspected to have been carried out by Israel — and urged all parties to avoid violence.
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said Thursday: “We have noted with concern the attack on Iranian diplomatic premises in Syria on 1 April 2024.”
Suspected Israeli warplanes bombed Iran’s embassy in Syria on Monday in a strike that Tehran said killed seven of its military advisers, including three senior commanders.
Israel has neither confirmed nor denied the attack, which can potentially further inflame the region.
“India is distressed at the escalating tensions in West Asia, and their potential to fuel further violence and instability. We urge all parties to avoid actions that go against commonly accepted principles and norms of International Law,” said Jaiswal.
Iran had said the strike hit a consular building in the embassy compound and that his residence was on the top two floors. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps have said that seven Iranian military advisers died in the strike including Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a senior commander in its Quds Force.
