Mumbai is set to witness a spike in temperatures over the next couple of days, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), with relief expected next week when light showers have been forecast in neighbouring Thane and Palghar districts.
While weather bureau scientists said that the likelihood of rain in Mumbai is slim, for now, it has sounded a yellow alert across several districts, a respite from the ongoing heatwave in the interiors parts of the state.
With the summer season setting in, Mumbai residents have been reeling under hot days with the Santacruz observatory recording a maximum temperature of 33 degrees Celsius on Wednesday.
According to IMD Mumbai, over the next couple of days, temperatures are slated to spike further in Mumbai as well as in Thane, touching up to 38-39 degrees Celsius.
Sushma Nair, scientist at IMD Mumbai, told The Indian Express, “For the next couple of days, the temperatures are going to increase in pockets of Mumbai and residents are also likely to feel uncomfortable. In Thane as well, several pockets can experience high temperatures of up to 38-39 degrees. However, after that, we have forecast light showers in Thane and Palghar.”
Attributing the unseasonal rainfall to the interaction of moist and dry winds, IMD scientists maintained that the intensity of rain in the neighbouring districts will be very light.
Meteorologists, however, ruled out rains in the megapolis. “There is no indication of showers in Mumbai as of now,” Nair added.
During the weekend, the weather bureau has sounded a yellow alert indicating the likelihood of thunderstorm coupled with lightning and gusty winds in Nashik, Nandurbar, Dhule as well as several districts of Vidarbha region.
A yellow alert was sounded in central Maharashtra and Vidarbha regions last week.
