Chaotic scenes unfolded in Guwahati’s Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport Sunday as water gushed into the airport and a section of the ceiling collapsed after a heavy storm in the city.
Flight operations were also temporarily disrupted and six flights were diverted to Agartala and Kolkata. According to an airport official, roof outlets in the airport got “heavily overflowed”.
“Outside the terminal building, a small portion of ceiling fell open due to pressure of water and wind. There is no injury or damage,” said the official.
Several videos widely shared on social media showed water pouring into the airport through the ceiling and some showed airport staff working to clear the excess water accumulated in the floor of the airport. Other videos showed a part of the ceiling in the forecourt collapsing.
The Guwahati airport, operated by the Adani Group, is the biggest airport in the North East and hub of connectivity in the region. The collapse in the airport infrastructure comes even before the monsoon has begun.
The India Meteorological Department on Sunday issued an ‘Orange Alert’ and forecast “heavy to very heavy” rainfall across several states of the northeast over the next five days.
IMD issued the alert for Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh.
