There are many theories about animals having the ability to sense earthquakes before they occur. A video posted on social media platform X purportedly showing a dog alerting residents in a house before the 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit Taiwan has now gone viral, amassing 3.9 million views within seconds.

In the video shared by @Yoda4ever, a dog inside a house in Taiwan is seen seated inside a piece of furniture when he suddenly stops. He can be seen running into the hallway to check something. Apparently sensing that the earthquake was about to hit, the dog can be seen running into the house and alerting people inside the other rooms. Seconds later, the floor, the furniture and the ceiling start shaking violently.

The residents of the house can then be seen walking out into the living area and lying under tables. The dog also returns to its position as the building keeps trembling and things fall out of shelves.

One user explained, “Dogs have been known to possess incredible sensory abilities, including detecting changes in the environment such as earthquakes, even before humans can perceive them. Their acute hearing and sensitivity to vibrations allow them to pick up on subtle cues that precede seismic activity. It’s truly remarkable how animals like dogs can serve as early warning systems, potentially helping to save lives by alerting their owners and giving them time to take precautionary measures.”

Another user added, “That’s incredible, isn’t it? Animals have such an amazing sense of these things. So glad the dog could give its owner a precious few seconds to react. It’s moments like this that remind us of the special bond between pets and their humans. Stay safe!”

And a third chimed in with, “Wow, dogs truly are man’s best friend! Better start listening to mine more often!”

Festive offer

The official central news agency in the country said the earthquake was the biggest to hit the island since 1999 when a 7.6 magnitude quake had killed around 2,400 people and destroyed 50,000 buildings in one of Taiwan’s worst-recorded quakes. The tremors triggered a tsunami warning in and around the islands of southern Japan and the Philippines.
