Vizag student ends life over ‘sexual harassment’, probe ordered

The Commissioner for Technical Education, Chadalavada Nagarani, on Saturday ordered a comprehensive probe and sought a detailed report within 24 hours. The SCPCR, too, sought a report from the police.

The police have registered a case and are questioning the college faculty members and students. They have seized the mobile phone of the deceased and are examining her call data records.

The WhatsApp messages that the teenager sent to her sister are also being examined and treated as a suicide note. The girl is believed to have killed herself around 2 am when her roommates were asleep, the police said.

She reportedly jumped from the top floor of her hostel building. In her last message to her sister, the teenager wrote she had decided to end her life as it would be difficult for everyone to understand her situation and her existence may cause more problems for her family. “My chapter is coming to an end,” she wrote.

“In fact, the reason behind my decision to end my life is sexual harassment. You may ask why I didn’t complain to the faculty, but what is the point when the harasser is one among them and is encouraging others too… They have taken my photos and are threatening to post them on social media. There are other girls as well just like me who cannot tell anyone. If I approach the police or college authorities, they will upload my photos on social media. I don’t have any other option now. Only if someone speaks up this issue will be revealed to the world… I am sorry I could not become a good daughter,” she wrote in the messages, according to the police.

Addressing her father, she added: “My decision will cause you some pain for now and you will forget later, but if I stay alive you will be pained each time you look at me. I am really lucky to have been born as your daughter but I am really sorry to put you through this.” On receiving these messages, the family informed the police and asked her to stay calm but did not receive any response.
