Erode MP and senior Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) leader A Ganeshamurthi died early Thursday morning at a private hospital in Coimbatore, following an alleged suicide bid. He was 77.

Sources close to him said the Tamil Nadu MP, who had a long political career, was reportedly suffering from severe depression over a complex personal issue that surfaced after he was denied a ticket to contest in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Ganeshamurthi allegedly tried to die by suicide on March 24 by consuming poison at his residence in Periyar Nagar, Erode. Upon finding him in an unconscious state, family members rushed him to a local private hospital, where he received initial treatment. Later, he was transferred to the Kovai Medical Center and Hospital (KMCH) in Coimbatore, where he passed away.

Tamil Nadu Housing and Urban Development Minister S Muthusamy, Modakurichi MLA C Saraswathi, former minister K V Ramalingam and MDMK general secretary Vaiko were among those who visited him in the hospital.

MDMK sources said Ganeshamurthi, a three-time Lok Sabha MP, was informed that he would be considered for the upcoming Assembly elections, in 2026. “But the denial of a ticket this time had triggered a complex personal issue that put him in severe distress,” an MDMK leader said.

Festive offer

Ganeshamurthi’s body was taken to a government hospital in Perundurai, Erode, for postmortem. His body will be placed for public homage in his hometown.

The local police are investigating the circumstances leading to Ganeshamurthi’s alleged suicide bid.
