Leader of Opposition in Mandvi taluka panchayat in Surat, Congress’ Shanker Chaudhary, was arrested by the
Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) while accepting a bribe of Rs 35,000 on Thursday. Along with Chaudhary, the ACB also arrested Bhupendra Gamit, a Congress worker and the deputy sarpanch of Patal gram panchayat in Mandvi.
The move comes after a farmer from Patal filed a complaint alleging that he had contacted Chaudhary and Gamit seeking to get a resolution passed in the gram panchayat so that he can level his agricultural land.
According to the ACB, both the accused demanded a bribe of Rs 1.5 lakh to pass the resolution but a deal was eventually struck at Rs 80,000.
Following this, the farmer contacted Surat ACB and filed a complaint against the accused on Wednesday. A trap was laid by the ACB and the farmer reached the Tapi river bridge on Thursday to handover the bribe. As soon as he handed over Rs 35,000 of the bribe amount to Gamit in the presence of Chaudhary, ACB officers caught them red-handed.
Surat ACB Assistant Director R R Chaudhary said, “As per the deal, the remaining bribe amount would have been paid after the resolution was passed by the gram panchayat. Both accused have been booked under Prevention of Corruption Act.”
