Amritsar man kills mother, 2 in family; police probing murder motive

The 35-year-old also murdered sister-in-law, nephew; surrendered at Jhander police station.

A 35-year-old man in Amritsar on Wednesday midnight allegedly murdered three of his family members, including his mother, and then surrendered before the police, investigators said.

Officials at the Jhander police station said the accused, Amritpal Singh, had been living separately from his wife and two children for the past two years in Kandowali village and was under tension.

The deceased have been identified as his mother Manbir Kaur, sister-in-law Avneet Kaur, and nephew Samarath Singh, 2.

The police on Thursday launched an investigation into the motive behind the triple murder and confirmed that the accused was not a drug addict.

According to the police, the brother of the accused has been working abroad for several years, while his wife Avneet Kaur and their son lived with his mother, Manbir Kaur.

“Accused reached the Jhander police station at midnight and confessed to murdering the three people. We are investigating all angles,” the officer said.

A neighbour remarked that the whole village was shocked after the triple murders as Amritpal was known to be a very calm person.

“He never had an issue with anyone nor was he a drug addict. We don’t know what made him commit the murders,” he added.
