In his first election rally in West Bengal after the Lok Sabha poll schedule was announced on March 16, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said that for India to become the world’s third largest economy, there is a need to have a stable government at the Centre.

Addressing a public meeting at Rash Mela Ground in Cooch Behar town, Modi said, “For India to become the third largest economy in the world, you need to elect a ‘majboot sarkar’ (stable government) in the country. A government which is not only stable but works round-the-clock for the people.”

“People of the world are now saying that Modi is a stable leader. Modi takes ‘majboot’ decisions for the welfare of the people. Modi has also taken tough decisions to put an end to corruption and terrorism and to ensure people get basic facilities across the country. Modi has taken strong decisions to ease the lives of women and people belonging to ST and SC communities. This could be achieved as we had good intentions. Modi ki niyat sahi hain (Modi’s intentions are true),” he said.

The Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal will be held in all seven phases from April 19 to June 1.

Before the elections were announced, PM Modi had addressed four rallies in the state from March 1 to 9, the first at Arambagh in Hooghly district, the second at Krishnanagar in Nadia district, the third at Barasat in North 24 Parganas district and the fourth one at Siliguri in Darjeeling district.

Festive offer

On Thursday, PM Modi also slammed the INDIA bloc for spreading misinformation among refugee communities regarding the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), rules of which were notified last month.

“The INDIA alliance of TMC [Trinamool Congress], Left and Congress never cared for Rajbanshi, Namasudra and Matua communities. Their only intention is to mislead these people. But it is Modi’s guarantee to give these people citizenship. These INDIA bloc parties will try to frighten the people. But you have seen what has been done in the last 10 years. You can put your faith in our government. Their (INDIA bloc) politics is based on spreading lies and misinformation. But ours is based on development,” PM Modi said. “Here, they fight against each other but stand united in Delhi. There, they share the food from the same plate,” Modi added.

The Prime Minister also sent out a strong message to those who indulge in corruption and asserted his resolve to put an end to it. “Bundles of cash were recovered from houses of TMC leaders. They want to protect the leaders who stole people’s jobs. Their (TMC) only job is to say bad things about Modi. They want corruption and violence to go on. Modi says, end corruption and atrocities. But they say, save corruption. But Modi will not sleep until corrupted leaders are not punished,” he said.

“In the coming five years, strong action will be taken against those who will indulge in corruption. In this election, a strong message has to be sent to the TMC. Corruption and violence must end at any cost. They have also stopped the implementation of central government schemes in Bengal. Despite providing a record number of funds to Bengal, the state government cannot complete the work in time,” Modi added.

Modi said that for Bengal’s development, the BJP needs to gain strength in the state.

“What happened in the last 10 years was a trailer. Now, we have to do a lot of work to take the country forward. We have to take West Bengal forward. For Bengal’s development, the BJP needs to gain strength. Only the BJP can stop atrocities against women in the state. The TMC government did everything to protect the culprits. But the BJP has taken a pledge that they will punish the offenders at any cost. For that you have to vote for the BJP here,” he said.

PM Modi also took a dig at Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for not creating any roadblocks before the BJP for holding Thursday’s rally. “I want to thank Mamata didi because in 2019 I had come to this very ground to hold a rally, and she had erected a stage in the middle of the ground so that it caused inconvenience to our workers. But people later gave her a befitting reply. But today she did not do any such thing. Therefore I could see all of you today. That’s why I want to thank the state government for not putting any obstacles to hold this rally today,” Modi said.

He also sounded a reminder that the Election Commission was alert this time to stop those who stop people from casting their votes.
